There are two main types of primary treatment centers – inpatient, and outpatient. Generally, a patient would first attend a detox in a medical environment and then continue on for primary treatment.
Inpatient rehab is one two types of formal addiction treatment programs. Generally characterized by a 28-day (initial) stay, patients stay on-site and are attended to around the clock by licensed professionals.
Recovery Residences: Sober living & halfway homes
Many patients are very sensitive to their living environment. Simply going back into the same living conditions that enabled their use can be problematic to recovery. Sober living and halfway homes are an intermediary step that provides a safe, encouraging environment with freedom and minimal cost (as compared to inpatient programs).
12 Step Programs
12 step programs are widely available to the public. These free support groups stemmed from the initial Alcoholics Anonymous plan and included the ubiquitous 12 step methodology for recovery.
Alcoholics Anonymous is the largest and most widely known support group for alcoholics and alcoholism. Meetings are free and widely available.
Counseling is instrumental and some form of it will be included in any of the above treatments. Some individuals elect to attend counseling in addition to other treatment paths. Additionally, co-occurring disorders are best served and explored with licensed counseling / psychiatric experts.
